As I sit and type, I realize that I am a flawed man. To consider myself otherwise would be not only naive, but also counterproductive to my intellectual and spiritual growth. There have been many instances in my life where I have taken faulty steps, and for nothing more than ordinary desires like money and women. I do not consider regret necessary for these events, for I am not the same person I was yesterday and I will not be the same person tomorrow.

I have suffered the consequences for these actions and accept them as mine without lying blame on anybody else outside the man staring back from the mirror. If the world influences me, then I influence the world just the same. Every action of greed, every action of evil, every action of impulse is met with more actions in the same vein, whether we acknowledge this or not. “Pay It Forward” isn’t just a heartwarming movie, and it isn’t just restricted to good deeds. It also isn’t always as voluntary as we think. Instead it comes in the form of a silent catalyst, subconsciously influencing our own morality and the morality of others with the same amount of notice as a mosquito’s nibble in the middle of a deep sleep.

When we awake and notice our itchy, annoying red bump on our arm, the only thing we can do is wait for it to heal and hope the mosquito flew out the window on it’s search for other unassuming victims. Thankfully, our morality is much more in our control than our household inhabitants. I have found many a red bumps in my character, and I’m still applying Neosporin to some.

They say everything happens for a reason, and I call bullshit. Everything happens though, I can’t deny that. We control what we do. “Everything happens for a reason” is the way we justify our bad decisions, when it really isn’t necessary to justify anything. The only thing that we can do now is alter those small parts of us that inconspicuously caused the behavior.

You change yourself, you change your family. You change your family, you change your community. You change your community, you change your city. You change your state, your country and your world just the same. The more of us fighting to change ourselves, the closer we’ll come to what we all want.
